The descent into the Royal Vault felt like stepping into the gullet of a sleeping titan.
The air grew thick, cold, and heavy with the metallic tang of dried blood and ancient magic. Torch sconces along the damp stone spiral stairwell flickered weakly with dying blue fire, casting long, distorted shadows that seemed to twist on their own.
At the base of the stairs, a massive set of shattered bronze doors hung off their hinges, revealing the Sanctum of the Dragon Seals.
The chamber was immense—a cavernous, circular hall carved directly from the living bedrock beneath the city. In the center hovered a blinding sphere of golden light the size of a carriage, suspended over a deep abyss by four massive, glowing chains of ancient draconic runes.
Or rather, three chains.
The eastern chain had already been severed, its broken links dangling uselessly in the dark air.
Plunged directly into the top of the golden sphere was a long, jagged blade forged from dark obsidian and wrapped in pulsing purple veins. The blade acted like a parasitic needle, draining the brilliant gold mana from the sphere and pumping it into a glowing magic circle on the floor.
Standing in the center of that circle was Araw Candias.
He wore dark noble robes trimmed with crimson silk. His dark hair was immaculately combed, and his pale, handsome face was completely serene. Beside him lay the unconscious, bound form of King Fontanis, his chest rising and falling in shallow breaths. Minister Vane stood a few paces back, his gray reptilian skin covered in sweat as he maintained the corruption ritual.
As Anwan, Sir Rodas, and Princess Feodia stepped onto the upper platform of the chamber, Araw did not turn around immediately. He simply raised one slender, gloved hand to adjust his collar.
"Five minutes ahead of my calculations," Araw spoke, his voice smooth, clear, and echoing effortlessly across the vast cavern. "I expected the stairwell traps to delay you slightly longer, Sir Rodas."
Rodas slammed his iron-capped staff against the stone floor, the heavy thud echoing like a war drum.
"Your traps were sloppy, Araw," Rodas growled, his scarred face grim. "Just like your statecraft. Release the King and step away from the Seal."
Araw turned around slowly, his lips curved into a polite, charming smile. But his eyes were utterly terrifying—irisless pools of swirling violet darkness that radiated cold, predatory intellect.
"Statecraft is merely the art of managing livestock, Commander," Araw replied lightly. "And as for the Seal... it has already served its purpose. For five hundred years, this golden cage has artificially locked the world’s mana, suppressing the natural evolution of beasts and mortals alike so your fragile kingdoms could pretend to be strong."
He looked past Rodas, his eyes locking directly onto Anwan.
"And you... Anwan Rodas."
Anwan stood quietly beside his master, his leather armor dusted with stone powder. He had already drawn his iron broadsword, holding it at a relaxed low-ready angle.
"You are the most fascinating anomaly I have encountered in two centuries," Araw said softly, stepping toward the edge of the ritual circle. "No mana core. No magical heritage. A boy whose muscles and bones have simply achieved absolute physical efficiency through pure, primitive repetition. You do not bend the world's laws; you simply ignore them."
"Your blade is very noisy," Anwan said, pointing his sword at the obsidian needle stuck in the Dragon Seal. "It sounds like a mosquito buzzing right in my ear."
Araw let out a soft, amused laugh.
"A mosquito that is currently rewriting the geography of five realms, child. Once the fourth chain breaks, the ancient ley lines will rupture. The Four Dragons will be forced to descend, the Boundary Accord will shatter, and the era of human complacency will end."
"Not while I can still swing a stick," Rodas barked.
The old Grand Commander moved first.
Despite his age, Rodas’s speed was terrifying. He closed a distance of thirty feet in a fraction of a second, his heavy wooden staff whistling through the air in a horizontal strike aimed square at Araw’s neck. The sheer atmospheric pressure of the swing split the stone floor beneath his boots.
CLANG!
A raw shield of purple force exploded outward from Araw’s hand, absorbing the blow. The shockwave rattled the massive cavern walls, sending loose stalactites crashing down into the abyss below.
"Vane! Deal with the Princess!" Araw commanded smoothly, his dark mana flaring as he pushed Rodas back three strides. "I will handle the Commander and his little shadow."
Minister Vane snarled, drawing two jagged bone daggers as he lunged toward Feodia.
"Your Highness!" Feodia drew a short silver thrusting sword from beneath her cloak, her eyes sharp with royal resolve as she met Vane's charge mid-air. "I am not a hostage anymore, Vane!"
Meanwhile, at the center of the platform, the battle devolved into a tempest of destructive forces.
Araw did not fight like a brute. He fought like an architect. With every wave of his gloved hand, geometric patterns of dark mana materialised in the air, firing compressed beams of disintegrating violet light, summoning gravity wells, and launching razor-sharp blades of dark force.
Rodas was a wall of mountain steel, his staff blurring in a defensive arc that deflected energy beams into the stone ceiling, shattering the cavern architecture.
WHOOSH!
Anwan moved inside the storm.
To normal eyes, the chamber was a chaos of blinding purple light and exploding stone.
To Anwan's absolute vision, it was a web of distinct, predictable vectors. He saw the six-millisecond charge time on Araw’s gravity spells. He saw the exact radius of the disintegrating beams. He saw the subtle weight transfer in Araw’s left knee every time he shifted his magical barrier.
Anwan stepped between two intersecting beams of violet light, his shoulder passing less than a quarter-inch from instantaneous vaporization.
He planted his boots, twisted his hips, and drove a lightning-fast thrust straight toward Araw’s throat.
Araw’s eyes widened slightly. He snapped his fingers, triggering a sudden, localized burst of reversed gravity beneath Anwan’s feet.
Anwan felt his body lift into the air, his balance momentarily floating away.
"Physical perfection means nothing when weight is stripped away, boy," Araw murmured coldly, raising his hand to fire a point-blank mana spear through Anwan’s chest.
"Master taught me that balance isn't in your boots," Anwan said calmly mid-air. "It's in your spine."
While floating upside down in zero gravity, Anwan contracted his core muscles with impossible precise tension. He flipped his entire body mid-air, used the flat of his iron broadsword to strike a falling piece of stone debris, and launched himself off the falling rock straight toward Araw with doubled speed.
THWACK!
Anwan’s iron blade struck Araw’s defensive barrier at the precise millisecond the spell's outer layer cycled its mana pulse—the single microscopic moment when the barrier was at its weakest.
CRACK!
The purple barrier shattered into thousands of glass-like fragments.
Araw gasped in genuine shock as the iron blade grazed his cheek, cutting a thin red line across his pale skin. A single droplet of dark blood welled on his cheekbone.
Araw backed away rapidly, his calm composure finally cracking, replaced by a dark, sinister rage. He touched his cheek, looking at the blood on his fingertips.
"You... touched me," Araw whispered, his voice trembling with dark fury. "A mere mortal child..."
"Anwan! Now!" Rodas shouted from behind.
The old Commander had bypassed Araw's secondary spell circles, slamming his staff into the stone floor directly beneath the ritual circle.
BOOM!
A shockwave of pure, unrefined physical force rippled through the bedrock, shattering the glowing magic circle and disrupting the dark mana flowing into the obsidian blade stuck in the Dragon Seal.
"No!" Vane shrieked from the side, distracted for a split second as Feodia used the opening to drive her silver blade through Vane’s shoulder, pinning the demon to a marble pillar.
Araw’s eyes burned with blinding violet fire.
"If I cannot have the power of the Dragon Seals..." Araw roared, his voice merging with a monstrous, demonic echo, "...then I will tear this city down to its roots!"
Araw slammed both hands into his own chest. His body swelled, his noble robes tearing apart as dark, parasitic demon flesh burst from his spine, expanding into a terrifying, twenty-foot-tall abomination of dark bone, multiple limbs, and swirling miasma.
The ceiling of the Sanctum began to cave in. Tones of rock plummeted into the cavern as the entire palace above shook violently.
"He's destroying the structural pillars of the Citadel!" Feodia yelled over the deafening roar of collapsing stone.
The massive demon-Araw raised four colossal bone scythes, aiming them directly down at the golden sphere of the Dragon Seal. He intended to crush the Seal entirely, triggering a cataclysmic explosion that would vaporize the entire capital city.
"Anwan!" Rodas yelled, throwing his staff to block two falling stone pillars. "The core! Hit the core!"
Anwan didn't hesitate. He pulled the glowing golden scale Layla had given him out of his coat and held it in his left hand while gripping his iron broadsword with his right.
The moment the draconic scale touched the air of the Sanctum, it resonated violently with the golden sphere of the Dragon Seal. A brilliant, blinding beam of pure golden light enveloped Anwan’s iron blade, coating the simple, chipped steel in an aura of unyielding, primordial dragon fire.
Anwan took a deep, steady breath.
The world went dead silent in his mind.
He saw the falling rocks stop mid-air. He saw the twenty-foot demon abomination moving in excruciating slow motion. He saw the dark, pulsating core of Araw's demonic form—a tiny, black seed hidden beneath five layers of dense bone armor at the center of his chest.
One step. Align the hips. Drive the steel.
Anwan blurred.
He didn't run along the ground. He leaped onto a falling five-ton boulder, kicked off it with enough force to shatter the rock into dust, and shot straight through the air like a golden meteor.
FLASH!
The golden-coated iron broadsword carved a single, clean, vertical line through the darkness of the cavern.
It passed through the four bone scythes.
It passed through the five layers of bone armor.
It passed straight through the black seed at Araw’s core.
Anwan landed cleanly on the far stone ledge, coming to a smooth halt as he sheathed his iron broadsword with a quiet clink.
For a second, the colossal demon stood frozen in mid-air above the abyss.
Then, a microscopic hairline fracture of golden light appeared across its entire twenty-foot body.
BOOM!
Araw’s demonic form exploded into a harmless cloud of golden ash, scattered into nothingness by the rushing winds of the cavern.
The parasitic obsidian needle stuck in the Dragon Seal shattered into dust. The golden sphere, freed from the corruption, emitted a warm, soothing shockwave of pure mana that instantly stabilized the collapsing cavern, repairing the cracked pillars and sealing the fissures in the rock.
The three glowing chains locked back into place, holding the world's balance secure once more.
Silence returned to the Sanctum.
Ten minutes later, on the sunlit surface of the Inner Citadel garden...
The dark miasma over the capital had completely cleared, revealing a bright, clear blue sky. Royal guards, freed from the mind-control catalyst, were busy detaining the remaining Eos infiltrators across the city.
King Fontanis, resting against a marble bench, gripped his daughter's hand with deep tearful gratitude as royal healers tended to his minor injuries.
Sir Rodas sat on a broken fountain rim, complaining loudly about his aching back while sipping water from a leather canteen.
Standing near the rose bushes was Anwan.
He was holding a massive wooden tray loaded with four entire roasted chickens, three bowls of thick beef stew, and a stack of warm bread, courtesy of the terrified yet overly eager royal kitchen staff.
Princess Feodia walked over to him, her face clean of soot, wearing a bright, relieved smile.
"You saved the kingdom, Anwan," Feodia said softly, looking at the quiet boy. "The King... my father wants to bestow upon you the title of Grand Hero of Fontaniska, along with a estate in the fertile southern valleys."
Anwan chewed a mouthful of roasted chicken, swallowed, and looked at her with a blank face.
"Do I have to pay taxes on the estate?"
Feodia blinked, then burst into a clean, ringing laugh.
"No, Anwan. Heroes do not pay taxes."
"Can I just have more chicken instead?" Anwan asked earnestly.
Feodia smiled warmly, stepping closer and patting his shoulder. "As long as I am Princess, you will have all the chicken you can eat."
High above the palace, invisible to the eyes of the knights and nobles below, a massive, majestic shape floated among the white clouds.
Layla, the Dragon of Wisdom, looked down at the short boy standing in the sunny garden, holding his tray of meat. A soft, satisfied smile touched her ancient lips.
"A blade forged without magic..." Layla whispered into the wind, her golden wings fanning the air as she turned back toward the distant northern mountains. "...perhaps this world is in good hands after all."
Down in the garden, Anwan took another large bite of roasted meat, looked up at the blue sky, and smiled warmly.
The sun was warm, his master was resting, his friend was safe, and for the first time in a very long time, his belly was completely full.
